When E. B. White said “analyzing humor is like dissecting a frog; few people are interested and the frog dies,” he hadn’t seen Al Gini’s hilarious, incisive, and informative take on jokes, joke-telling, and the jokers who tell jokes. For Gini, humor is more than just foolish fun: it serves as a safety valve for dealing with reality that gives us the courage to endure that which we cannot understand or avoid. Not everyone tells jokes. Not everyone gets a joke, even a good one. But, Gini argues, joke-telling can act as both a sword and a shield to defend us from reality. As the late, great stand-up comic Joan Rivers put it: ‘If you can laugh at it, you can live with it!’ This book is for anyone who enjoys a good laugh, but also wants to know why.

In A Vulgar Art Ian Brodie uses a folkloristic approach to stand-up comedy, engaging the discipline’s central method of studying interpersonal, artistic communication and performance. Because stand-up comedy is a rather broad category, people who study it often begin by relating it to something they recognize—“literature” or “theatre”; “editorial” or “morality”—and analyze it accordingly. A Vulgar Art begins with a more fundamental observation: someone is standing in front of a group of people, talking to them directly, and trying to make them laugh. So this book takes the moment of performance as its focus, that stand-up comedy is a collaborative act between the comedian and the audience. Although the form of talk on the stage resembles talk among friends and intimates in social settings, stand-up comedy remains a profession. As such, it requires performance outside of the comedian’s own community to gain larger and larger audiences. How do comedians recreate that atmosphere of intimacy in a roomful of strangers? This book regards everything from microphones to clothing and LPs to Twitter as strategies for bridging the spatial, temporal, and socio-cultural distances between the performer and the audience.

Comedy, Seriously provides a philosophical interpretation of comedy and argues that comedy displays a particular kind of rationality that reflects philosophical thinking. In particular, that comedy is defined not so much by laughter or jokes, but rather the structure of its plot, which is isomorphic with that of the philosophical argument. Comedy allows for the resolution of a conflict and the achievement of well-being and equality through action that follows the comic plot. Moreover, such action is propelled by the 'thinker on stage,' who, as socially and politically oppressed, contributes to the liberation of all and the achievement of the good life. Comedy, therefore, establishes the universal pattern for justice and well-being and allows us to rethink the notion of subjectivity not as the modern isolated subject, but rather as integrated with others through shared action and dialogical involvement.

Comedy is a brutal business. When comedians define success, they don't talk about money—they talk about not quitting. They work in a business where even big names work for free, and the inequalities of race, class, and gender create real barriers. But they also work in a business where people still believe that hard work and talent lead to the big time. How do people working in comedy sustain these contradictions and keep laughing? In Behind the Laughs, Michael P. Jeffries brings readers into the world of comedy to reveal its dark corners and share its buoyant lifeblood. He draws on conversations with comedians, as well as club owners, bookers, and managers, to show the extraordinary social connections professional humor demands. Not only do comedians have to read their audience night after night, but they must also create lasting bonds across the profession to get gigs in the first place. Comedy is not a meritocracy, and its rewards are not often fame and fortune. Only performers who know the rules of their community are able to make it a career.

A collection of 144 stories, experiences, observations, imaginations, exaggerations, lists, truths, half-truths, true lies and basically, stuff I thought was funny enough to write about every week in a humor column that went by the same name. This weekly 800 word effort appeared in newspapers during the early 2000's and showed that humor can often be found right in front of us if we just take the time to stop, look and eavesdrop... uh, I mean listen. But if you want a common thread meant to be shared throughout these personal insights, here's a very simple one to start with: fun.*If you need more incentive to dig into this massive volume of nonsense, these 144 blasts of 800 words each can be devoured in short segments. In other words, you can pick it up, read one or two and drop it back down almost anywhere to be picked up again later.*But I can't accept all the credit or even most of the blame in some cases, since I wasn't the only one laughing and contributing. Jokes, lists and stories sent to me by readers were always encouraged and fill up the Audience Participation section in the book. I view them now as another time capsule of the 2000's and as more proof things have changed by demonstrating political correctness was not exactly a hot topic at the time. Just keep in mind they were sent in for the laughter value. At least I hope that was true...*The remaining sections of this book are titled after the subject they cover: A Guy Thing, Parenthood and Holidays. This means some of the articles in this collection can be seasonal and related to celebrations and special occasions. There is a reason for that. When they originally appeared as a weekly column, it was inevitable I would comment on what was going on at that time. So, if it's cold outside while you're reading about summer heat, just use you're imagination. What the heck - it's a lot cheaper than a plane ticket to the tropics. Keep laughing!
