Crime Prevention: Principles, Perspectives and Practices is a concise, comprehensive introduction to the theory and practice of crime prevention. The authors contend that crime prevention strategies should include both social prevention and environmental prevention. It embraces these strategies as an alternative to policing, criminal justice and 'law and order'. Part 1 presents an overview of the history and theory of crime prevention, featuring chapters on social prevention, environmental prevention and evaluation. Part 2 explores the practice of crime prevention and the real life challenges of implementation, including policy making, prevention in public places, dealing with social disorder and planning for the future. Crime Prevention provides readers with an understanding of the political dimension of crime prevention and the ability to critically analyse prevention techniques. It is essential reading for undergraduate students of criminology, crime prevention and public policy.

In Crime Prevention: Theory and Practice, Second Edition, Dr. Schneider has updated every chapter in this reliable text using the latest research, the most recently published articles and books, and feedback from professors and students using the first edition. Providing an introduction to dominant approaches, key concepts, theories, and research, the book supplies concrete advice on planning, implementing, and evaluating a crime prevention plan. This edition includes a new chapter applying crime prevention through social development principles to adolescents and young adults. This chapter is a recognition of the disproportionate rate of offending by adolescents and young adults as well as the distinctive risk factors faced by these groups. It also emphasizes the unique nature of applying social problem-solving solutions to adolescents and young adults who have been in formal contact with the criminal justice system. The focus is on recidivism prevention, an often-ignored, but critical aspect of crime prevention. Laying out a systematic blueprint for a successful crime prevention project, the book also updates the extant literature on crime prevention—in particular the addition of research that has been published since the first edition of this book. Updated case studies reflecting new data present real examples of crime prevention programs and organizations and illustrate the conceptual, theoretical, and empirical elements of the book. Learning objectives, discussion questions, and exercises facilitate learning and retention and a companion website provides ancillary material for students and professors.

Violence and insecurity are among the most important issues facing communities in the 21st century. Both family violence and community violence are rapidly rising in the urbanizing nations of the South, and richer nations are also facing increased concern about the health, social, economic and environmental costs of violence and crime. The Handbook of Community Safety, Gender and Violence Prevention is the first book to gather together research and examples, from a gendered perspective, of local, regional and international interventions that work to prevent crime, violence and insecurity. Case studies of successful initiatives from every continent, in settings that vary from large cities to rural areas, are analysed to provide cross-cultural lessons of what works and what doesnt. The book presents essential practical advice to professionals such as: how to obtain diagnostic information on incidence and impacts of violence; how to develop, maintain and evaluate policies and programmes that can effectively promote community safety; and how to create trust and effectiveness in partnerships.

This report outlines the relationship between older Australians, crime, crime prevention and fear of crime. It discusses the risks for older Australians of becoming victim to various types of crime, and finds that older people in Australia are far less likely to be victims of crime than people in other age groups. The report recommends targeting strategies both to prevent victimisation and to counter older people's fears about becoming a victim of crime, as such fearfulness can potentially limit quality of life and lead to social isolation. These strategies are best implemented at a local government level, as part of a community safety strategy, and in partnership with other key agencies and stakeholders.

Community-based crime control has become one of the principal policy responses to crime and disorder across western societies, and is regarded now as one of the keys to successful crime prevention and reduction. The aim of this book is to bring together findings from case studies of community-based crime control in England as a means of examining the prospects for this approach, its evolving relationship with criminal justice and social policies, and to assess the lessons internationally that can be drawn from this in the theory, research methods, politics and practice of crime control. At the same time the book advances an important new conceptual framework for understanding community-based crime control, focusing on an understanding of the diversity of control and preventative strategies, the locally particular conditions in which they are conducted, and the degree of choices open to local political actors involved in their conduct. Understanding diversity in this way is central to drawing lessons about the transferability of crime control theory and practice from one social context to another, avoiding the naïve emulation of practices in different contexts.

Ordinary people are natural experts on safety in their own communities. The key to creating a city where people feel safe is to give citizens input into developing safer environments for themselves. This book offers a set of easy-to-follow guidelines – well illustrated with photos – that can be used to improve urban safety. It also includes success stories on the ways that ordinary people, working in partnership with local governments and agencies have taken the initiative to fight back against violent crime in public housing, transit, parks and open places, underground parking, schools, houses and neighbourhoods.
