Death is increasingly on the agenda for baby boomers moving ever closer to it. Timothy Leary brings some startlingly fresh ideas to this topic. Fundamentally, he claims, we have been brainwashed by our institutions — government, organized religion, the healthcare industry — to accept death as an inevitable end. Leary argues instead that death is misunderstood, that we don't have to die, and that there are "commonsense alternatives." His theory rests on the transhumanist approach that says human beings are evolving into spiritual machines — beings that are part human and part machine and eventually will not die as the term is commonly understood. Being fitted with machine parts like bionic knees is part of this process. And as we evolve through the cybernetic age, he says, we will gain new wisdom that broadens our definition of personal immortality and gene-pool survival — the "postbiologic option of the information species."

Cybernetic Revelation explores the dual philosophical histories of deconstruction and artificial intelligence, tracing the development of concepts like the "logos" and the notion of modeling the mind technologically from pre-history to contemporary thinkers like Slavoj Žižek, Steven Pinker, Bernard Stiegler and Daniel C. Dennett. The writing is clear and accessible throughout, yet the text probes deeply into major philosophers seen by JD Casten as "conceptual engineers." Philosophers covered include: Anaximander, Heraclitus, Parmenides, Plato, Aristotle, Philo, Augustine, Shakespeare, Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz, Locke, Berkeley, Hume, Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche, Freud, Jung, Joyce, Dewey, Wittgenstein, Heidegger, Adorno, Benjamin, Derrida, Chomsky, Žižek, Pinker, Dennett, Hofstadter, Stiegler + more; with special chapters on: AI's history, Complexity, Deconstructing AI, Aesthetics, Consciousness + more...

This is a book about the evolution of the consciousness from a memetic algorithm inhabiting a biological host, carried over chemical-electronic network -- into a digital ghost of viral expansion distributed along a silicium magnetic network of cloud computing hardware. The book touches on spiritual aspects of modern digital culture and how it transfers back from ages of shamanic dance, meditative contemplation and telepathy. In modern 21st century realities, the taken for granted Internet network, when drilled down and looked at into investigative mode, reveals to be a model of communication borrowed from nature. The same memetic will that has driven mankind to create and invent machines and semantic models of replication, to support life and survival, has now opened a new era of mediums to inhabit - the invention, creation and implementation of the Internet and its prodigy child - the Big Data - are nothing more than that very same memetic virus driving the human race through evolution - manifesting itself to leave the biological host and inhabit a new horizon for existence - the digital ether of cyberspace.
