"We used to go to the movies. We used to speak of flicks, even flicking out. We used to stand in line with friends in delicious anticipation to buy tickets for a movie that got a rapturous review. We used to be ushered into blinding darkness within cavernous halls of downtown gilded-age theaters to look at enormous screens. And we might go without regard to when the feature began, enter in the middle, sit through its ending, its double-bill and shorts, and only then watch the beginning of what we wanted to see. A small personal triumph occurred when, seeing a flick with friends or family, you were the first one to get up to leave announcing that "this was the place in the movie where we came in."--

Movies on Our Minds

There is no perfection to be measured in organism/ niche relations and none to be measured in movie/ mind relations. Flourishing is the only measure of the adequacy of the fit, and popular movies have certainly flourished.

Movies as Artifacts

Some of us may change our minds about Antonioni or remark how Antonioni has changed his mind— say, from a vision of vanishing humanity to a faith in its regeneration— but the movie won't change our minds about its topics.

This book pairs close readings of some of the classic writings of existentialist philosophers with interpretations of films that reveal striking parallels to each of those texts, demonstrating their respective philosophies in action. Individual chapters include significant excerpts from the original texts being discussed and illustrated. Pairings cover Schopenhauer and Waking Life, Stirner and Hud, Kierkegaard and Winter Light, Nietzsche and The Fountainhead, Heidegger, Blade Runner and The Thin Red Line, Camus, Leaving Las Vegas and Missing, Sartre, Husbands and Wives, and Michael Collins, de Beauvoir and Revolutionary Road, and Foucault and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Movies with Meaning offers a clear and insightful examination of the relationships between existential philosophers and film, providing both digests of their most significant texts and cinematic illustrations of what each had in mind. For the first time in one place, this book analyses the implications for film of the perspectives of a wide array of the most significant existentialist thinkers. Organized chronologically, like most existentialism anthologies, this is an ideal textbook for an intermediate level existentialism course, or as a companion to a selection of primary texts.

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,3, University of Frankfurt (Main) (Seminar für Anglistik), course: Hamlet: Text, Context, Criticism, language: English, abstract: In his lifespan William Shakespeare wrote 37 plays and 154 sonnets. However, there is one play by William Shakespeare that is considered special by many people. It is his longest and most complex play. "Hamlet" is a play that still is very much read and performed. Additionally it was made into feature films many times and still seems to entertain audiences around the world. There are other plays that seem to 'return' every couple years, when they are made into a movie or are once again performed on stage, but somehow people seem to react to "Hamlet" in a special way. These reactions raise the thought that the whole play seems to have something timeless and special about it. In this text, the author takes a look at three different interpretations of the play that were done on film: the "Hamlet" of 1990, of 1996 and of 2000 and compares the similarities and differences of these depictions.

Provides an easy-to-understand introduction into NLP as it captures the magic of the cinema and relates it to our everyday thoughts. The author expertly, and simply, explains that all our emotions, thoughts, skills and feelings are controlled by the "films" that we constantly run through our minds and that, more importantly, we can take control of these films to empower ourselves. Shows how to turn the horror movies of our life into action adventures, the tragedies into love stories and daytime soaps into blockbusting epics because we can edit, direct and produce them in any format we wish.
