"Many innovative approaches to teaching are being used around the country, and there is an exciting energy about the scholarship of teaching and learning. But what is happening in the most effective music theory and aural skills classrooms? Based on three years of field study spanning seventeen states, coupled with reflections from the author on her own teaching strategies, Teaching Music Theory: New Voices and Approaches highlights teaching approaches with substantial real-life examples from instructors across the country. The main premise of the text focuses on the question of why. Why do we assess in a particular way? Why are our curriculums designed in a certain manner? Why should students master aural skills for their career as a performer, music educator, or music therapist? It is through the experiences shared in the text that many of these questions of "why" are answered. Along with answering some of the important questions of "why," topics such as classroom environment, undergraduate research and mentoring, assessment, and approaches to curriculum development are emphasized. Teaching Music Theory: New Voices and Approaches is written in a conversational tone in order to provide a starting point of dialogue for students, new faculty members, and seasoned educators on any level. It is through the pedagogical trends presented and the continued conversation encouraged by the author that one can begin to have a greater appreciation of outstanding teaching and thus an understanding of our own approaches in the classroom"--

As the ABRSM grade 5 Music Theory exam will take place online from 2020 onwards, nearly all of the questions will become multiple choices questions. The online test will be more focused on analysis instead of simply writing your own answers. Though the topics that will appear in the exam will remain the same as before, all students have to get used to the new format of the exam. This book is written for students who are going to take the grade 5 Music Theory exam in the new format (i.e. the online test format from 2020 onwards). Most of the exercises in this book are multiple choices questions; but students may still be asked to write simple information (e.g. a number or a note) in some of the questions--just as like as in the real online exam. Hope every students will have enough practice and get used to the new format before the real exam!

As a music teacher of over 35 years of experience, I have never had a student fail a theory exam. Through my own understanding of what works best for students and how some of the alternative material on the market can sometimes be a very tedious method of learning, I have developed this course as a compliment to my video series on the YouTube channel MusicOnline UK and I am confident that you will find success in your exam by going through this course. So are you ready to get started on your road to Music Theory understanding.....

"This book is designed for faculty and graduate assistants working with undergraduate music majors as well as non-majors in colleges and universities in the United States. It includes suggestions for designing and organizing music courses (applied music as well as academic classes) and strategies for meeting the developmental needs of the undergraduate student. It addresses concerns about undergraduate curricula that meet National Association of School of Music requirements as well as teacher education requirements for music education majors in most states. A common theme throughout the book is a focus on "learner-centered pedagogy" (Weimer, 2013) or trying to meet students where they are and base instruction on their individual needs. The text also maintains a constant focus on the relationship between teaching and learning and encourages innovative ways for instructors to assess student learning in music courses. Teaching is connected throughout the book to student learning and the lecture model of "teaching as transmission of information" (Bain, 2004) is discouraged. Activities throughout the book ask instructors to focus on what it means to be an effective teacher for music courses. As there is limited research on teaching music in higher education, we have relied on comprehensive texts from the general education field to help provide the research base for our definition of effective teaching (Davis, 2009; Svinicki & McKeachie, 2014)"--
