What does poststructuralism mean for authors such as Foucault, Lyotard, Cixous, Derrida, and Haraway, to name a few, and what significance does it have for educational inquiry? This book takes on these central questions and explores the impact of postructuralism in language that makes the basic issues at stake accessible for a broad readership. Michael A. Peters and Nicholas C. Burbules highlight the implications of a postructuralist stance for the conception of the research subject and examine its standards of validity and methods of investigation.

In academia, the effects of the “cultural turn” have been felt deeply. In everyday life, tenets from cultural politics have influenced how people behave or regard their options for action, such as the reconfiguration of social movements, protests, and praxis in general.

This work is a systematic analysis of texts with arguments on political performance of representation and agency in education. The author critically examines discourses on the politics of difference including those of Paulo Freire, Claude Levi-Strauss, Iris M. Young, and Chantal Mouffe. Derrida's thoughts on the political as a way to understand difference and identity in education concludes the volume. This work begins with an examination of Hegel's work on the relationship between the lord and the bondsman, which is implemented in the political discourse of Paulo Freire. It explores the methodological value of concepts of opposition; it looks at the work by Levi-Strauss on cultural differences as well as that of Iris M. Young and Chantal Mouffe on the politics of difference. Anxious Identity calls for a consideration of Derrida's thoughts on the poltical as an approach to understanding difference and identity. In addition to work of Western philosophers and theorists, included are the postcolonial writers Homi Bhabha and Gayatri Spivak.

“This comprehensive and thoughtful volume is the first book to investigate, assess and apply a philosophy of education drawn from the great French philosopher Gilles Deleuze. It contains powerful and beautiful essays by some of the most influential Deleuze and Guattari commentators (the chapters by Bogue, Colebrook, May and Semetsky, and Genosko are particularly rewarding). The book provides very useful situations within the philosophy of education and some interesting experimental developments of Deleuze’s work, notably in terms of new technologies and original methods. This is then an indispensable work on Deleuze and education. It covers the historical background and begins shaping debates for future research in this exciting and growing area.” —Professor James Williams, Professor of European Philosophy, School of Humanities, University of Dundee, author of Gilles Deleuze’s Difference and Repetition: A Critical Introduction and Guide and The Transversal Thought of Gilles Deleuze: Encounters and Influences

Education plays an important role in challenging, combating and in understanding terrorism in its different forms, whether as counter-terrorism or as a form of human rights education. Just as education has played a significant role in the process of nation-building, so education also plays a strong role in the process of empire, globalization and resistance to global forces-and in terrorism, especially where it is linked to emergent statehood. This book focuses on the theme of education in an age of terrorism, exploring the conflicts of globalization and global citizenship, feminism post-9/11, youth identities, citizenship and democracy in a culture of permanent war, and the relation between education and war, with a focus on the war against Iraq.
