Despite some improvement in theatre utilisation, waiting lists and the length of time which patients have to wait for treatment in Northern Ireland remain the worst in the UK. Using operating theatres to their optimum could directly contribute to their reduction. Following on from a Northern Ireland Audit Office report (HCP 552, session 2002-03; ISBN 0102924333) published in April 2003, the Committee's report examines options for maximising operating theatre capacity and reducing waiting lists; better theatre management and control; and the shortage of theatre staff and the limited availability of beds.

Woodhead and Wicker's new text will be the foremost reference source for all perioperative practitioners. The content mirrors the dynamics of modern perioperative practice by focusing on surgical interventions in all the environments in which it is currently practised, including A&E departments, general practice clinics, intensive care units, and at the site of serious accidents. Theatre practice is becoming increasingly specialist; this book does not attempt to to reflect the needs of all specialties, but instead concentrates on the principles of practice, applicable to any setting and any specialty. It has a very practical focus - it aims to be the book that nurses and ODPs reach for in order to answer their practical questions - but is not be procedure-driven. Instead, it sets out the principles of perioperative practice, from which practitioners will be able to develop their own practice techniques. Reflects principles of practice, applicable to any perioperative environment Strong practical focus Edited by two of the biggest 'names' in the international perioperative nursing sphere, with contributions from other well-known and authoritative sources Excellent opportunities to develop links with the National Association of Theatre Nurses and the European Operating Room Association The team of contributors are experienced practitioners working directly with perioperative patients or in perioperative education An original model for ethical practice is proposed: the Reid model is the first such ethical model to be proposed for the perioperative environment Includes one of the only chapters in any perioperative book which specifically focuses on the care of the elderly. The research chapter encourages the use of evidence based practice and the development of perioperative research The unique chapter on care of the mentally ill will support practitioners who are not qualified in psychiatry to care for mentally ill patients. This is an area where there is a great information deficit Key points listed for each chapter Sections have been completely revised from previous edition - key subject areas now stand-alone chapters rather than sections within much larger chapters - creates ease of access for user Change of editorship Recognises the diversity of perioperative environments much more explicitly than previous edition

Practical budget management is at the core of this book. As well as giving an insight into the way budgets behave in certain circumstances and what can be done about it, the book also deals with practical steps the budget and resource manager can take to eliminate waste and reduce opportunities for fraud and collusion. Better budget management means that the organisation can concentrate greater resources on matters that will significantly enhance patient and client care. The book identifies the day-to-day issues that affect managers in health and social services, and provides advice and a structured approach that facilitate both comprehension of the problem areas and possible solutions. It successfully reduces complex budget issues into manageable chunks, with case studies, key points, tips, and worked examples to aid understanding. It offers practical assistance to managers, tutors, students, board members and other health and social care professionals. The book is third in a trilogy which provides practical solutions to the complex problems of resource, financial and budget management in health and social care. "Managing in Health and Social Care" provides essential checklists for frontline staff is about process quality in financial and business management. It concentrates on doing the right thing, first time, every time. "Resource Management in Health and Social Care": essential checklists is about matching available resources to the environment. It deals with workplace and environmental problems associated with resource scarcity. 'Although there may be constant change to organisation and structures, great improvements in care, treatment, and technology and ever more sophisticated ways of funding health and social care, the actual act of spending money will always be the responsibility of budget managers who are in the front line. This book identifies the day-to-day issues that affect managers in health and social services and provides advice and a structured approach that facilitate both comprehension of the problem areas and possible solutions.' - William Bryans, in the Introduction.

The new edition of Major Incident Medical Management and Support is a vital component in the blended learning course from Advanced Life Support Group (ALSG), which aims to provide hospital staff at all levels with essential information on the preparation, management and support elements of dealing with casualties in a major incident. Split into five sections, each focuses on the elements requisite in preparing for, and responding, to a major incident. The first section discusses the epidemiology and incidences of major incidents and the structured approach to the hospital response. The second section contains the preparation required in planning for major incidents, including equipment and training. The third section covers the management of a major incident, concentrating on the clinical, nursing and management hierarchies. The fourth includes the various stages of support in a major incident, including declaring an incident and activating the plan, the reception, triage, definitive care and recovery phases of an incident. The final section focuses on special incidents which require additional consideration, including those involving hazardous chemicals, burns and children. Written in collaboration with the National Emergency Planning, Major Incident Medical Management and Support is an invaluable reference in the emergency department and beyond for staff needing to prepare for the rare, but inevitable, hospital major incidence response.

There is a large influx of trauma, general surgical, pediatric, neurosurgical and obstetric emergencies as the hospital is one of the major public hospitals located in a densely populated region sitting amidst major routes in the city. It also provides services for emergency cardiovascular, cerebrovascular interventions and cadaver transplants. Daily lessons from this tremendous emergency work inspired us to bring out this book. There is plethora of reference material available in basic sciences related to anesthesiology, namely physiology, pharmacology, physics and anatomy. Similarly, a large number of textbooks are on techniques such as general, regional, monitored anesthesia care as well as super specialties like cardiac, neurosurgical and pediatric anesthesia, etc. But there is a limited availability of books and references for emergency anesthesia. One has to scan and integrate parts from various sources. This book is an attempt to assimilate the scattered information and add clinical expertise. Contents of this book have been divided into nine sections to cover majority of the emergencies. General considerations for adults, obstetric and pediatric sections have been written separately to avoid duplication. An additional challenge is cases with various medical disorders for emergency surgeries. Efforts have been taken to accommodate them in first section and obstetric section. The contributors of this book work together at LTMMC and LTMGH and have a well-balanced team with fresh talent bringing the latest technological knowledge and tenured practitioners supplementing it with applied experience. Part of the team worked on collection of the matter from different sources for an ideal scenario, while the senior faculty members used their vast clinical experience for a more practical and realistic application. These combined efforts have been truly beneficial to achieve our goal to rationally mix latest technology with clinical experience and identify potential ways to conduct anesthesia with best results, at least costs and minimum risk.
