Antidepressants today top the list of drugs prescribed to women. But what happens when you add pregnancy into the mix? Pregnant on Prozac is the first guide to separate the myths from the facts. Taking a pull-no-punches, prescriptive approach, it clearly spells out not only the possible risks of antidepressant use—whether it be Prozac, Wellbutrin, or any of the host of other drugs—by hopeful mothers but also the lesser-known yet serious risks to both fetus and mother from untreated depression. Shoshana Bennett answers such questions as: Does the media exaggerate the risk? What of options such as tapering the dose? What alternatives are worth pursuing? Most importantly, she empowers each woman with the knowledge to make the best decision for her. Pregnant on Prozac is a must-have for any prospective mother who has experienced depression or anxiety as well as anyone with a friend or loved one in this situation.

"Fluoxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, which is used to treat depression during pregnancy. The aim of this study was to test if treatment of pregnant guinea pigs with fluoxetine affects serotonin (5-HT) receptors or behaviors modulated by 5-HT in the resulting offspring. The first experiment consisted of injecting pregnant guinea pigs with 7 mg/kg/day of fluoxetine or vehicle through gestation, or delivering no treatment. Hippocampal 5-HT1A receptor densities were measured in male offspring at 2 weeks of age, and 5-HT2A receptor densities were measured in the striatum and frontal cortex of male offspring at 9 weeks of age. There were no significant effects of treatment on receptor densities in these offspring. Secondly, pregnant guinea pigs were administered fluoxetine (mmg/kg/day) or vehicle using osmotic mini-pumps through gestation, or no treatment was delivered. In this study, pregnancy characteristics and maternal and pup weights were assessed. Acoustic startle responses, prepulse inhibition of acoustic startle and nociception using a hot-plate test were analyzed in the offspring. No significant treatment effects were found for all outcome measures except in the hot-plate test where the vehicle group had significantly lower nociceptive thresholds compared to both fluoxetine and no treatment controls, when data for 9 week-old males and females were combined. The reduced nociceptive threshold after prenatal vehicle treatment is consistent with previous reports that prenatal stress can reduce pain threshold. Our finding that fluoxetine exposure in the pregnant dam has anti-nociceptive effects in offspring as adults is a novel finding, and is consistent with previous reports that fluoxetine administered to adult animals has antinociceptive properties." --

A psychiatrist takes a critical look at this SSRI and newer medications that are among the most frequently prescribed drugs in America. Prozac. Millions of Americans are on it. And just about everyone else is wondering if they should be on it, too. The claims of the pro‐Prozac chorus are enticing: that it can cure everything from depression (the only disorder for which Prozac was originally approved) to fear of public speaking, PMS, obesity, shyness, migraine, and back pain—with few or no side effects. But is the reality quite different? At what price do we buy Prozac‐induced euphoria and a shiny new personality? Psychiatrist Peter Breggin, MD, and coauthor Ginger Ross Breggin answer these and other crucial questions in Talking Back to Prozac. They explain what Prozac is and how it works, and they take a hard look at the real story behind today’s most controversial drug: The fact that Prozac was tested in trials of four to six weeks in length before receiving FDA approval The difficulty Prozac’s manufacturer had in proving its effectiveness during these tests The information on side effects that the FDA failed to include in its final labeling requirements How Prozac acts as a stimulant not unlike the addictive drugs cocaine and amphetamine The dangers of possible Prozac addiction and abuse The seriousness and frequency of Prozac’s side effects, including agitation, insomnia, nausea, diarrhea, loss of libido, and difficulty reaching orgasm The growing evidence that Prozac can cause violence and suicide The social and workplace implications of using the drug not to cure depression but to change personality and enhance performance Using dramatic case histories as well as scientific research and carefully documented evidence, the Breggins expose the potentially damaging effects of Prozac. They also describe the resounding success that has been achieved with more humane alternatives for the treatment of depression. Talking Back to Prozac provides essential information for anyone who takes Prozac or is considering taking it, and for those who prescribe it.

It should be a time of joyous anticipation–the happiest time in a woman’s life. But for many women, the joys of pregnancy are clouded by feelings of fear, sadness, and confusion. And unlike postpartum depression, which is widely portrayed in the media and embraced by the medical community, depression during pregnancy has been rarely discussed and often misunderstood–until now. In this groundbreaking book–the first to focus exclusively on depression in pregnancy–Dr. Shaila Kulkarni Misri, a leading reproductive psychiatrist, draws on her twenty-five years of clinical practice and research to offer hope, help, and healing–as well as a provocative, myth-shattering examination of a subject that has too long been shrouded in darkness. The numbers are surprising: up to 70 percent of pregnant women experience some degree of depressive symptoms, and of those, 12 percent meet the diagnostic criteria for major depression. Although it is at least as common as postpartum depression, which occurs after a child’s birth, pregnancy-related depression is often cloaked in silence, shame, and denial. Pregnancy Blues lifts the veil on this heartbreaking–and very treatable– illness, examining the key social and biological factors that can come together during pregnancy to create a climate in which depression and anxiety thrive, as well as offering the many effective treatments that are available. Discover: • How to recognize the signs and symptoms of depression–and know when to seek help • The role of female hormones: why women are more vulnerable to depression than men • How depression can “hide” behind physical complaints, such as back, stomach, or even chest pain • The unspoken connection between infertility and depression • The antidepressant controversy: the facts on specific drugs, their safety–and when medication is the right choice • Breastfeeding and medication–the risks and benefits Plus helpful self-tests and resources, information on alternative treatment options–from therapy to acupuncture–and much more. A work of daring and compassion, Pregnancy Blues challenges the underlying traditions and beliefs surrounding pregnancy and motherhood–and explores how those misconceptions have led to the drastic underdiagnosis and undertreatment of depression during pregnancy. A must-read for women and those who love them, Pregnancy Blues is at once an extraordinary roadmap to healing and an eye-opening report on a medical issue that no woman can afford to miss.

As the gap between science fiction and science fact has narrowed, films that were intended as pure fantasy at the time of their premier have taken on deeper meaning. This volume explores neuroscience in science fiction films, focusing on neuroscience and psychiatry as running themes in SF and finding correlations between turning points in “neuroscience fiction” and advances in the scientific field. The films covered include The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Island of Dr. Moreau, Robocop, The Stepford Wives, The Mind Snatchers and iconic franchises like Terminator, Ironman and Planet of the Apes. Examining the parallel histories of psychiatry, neuroscience and cinema, this book shows how science fiction films offer insightful commentary on the scientific and philosophical developments of their times.
