The National Association for Multicultural Education in Washington, D.C., listed a number of issues that the school curriculum should address with reference to multicultural education, including racism, sexism, classism, linguicism, ablism, ageism, heterosexism, and religious intolerance. It is noteworthy that of all these issues, religion is about the only one that throughout history people are willing to die for, although whether what is at issue is really religion or other things such as territory is another matter. It is also interesting that all the others have isms in their names but religious issues are characterized by intolerance. Perhaps we should try to understand this intolerance and look at what steps might help to alleviate it. However, while intolerance might seem a simple thing, understanding what is behind it and how it plays such a crucial role in religion requires what we refer to in the Introduction chapter as a multifaceted approach at multiple levels. It is not enough just to try to dispel stereotypes of followers of other religions, or to point out commonalities in world religions. We should, for example, try to understand and appreciate how adherents of other religions try to answer questions regarding their adaptation to the contemporary environment. It is through understanding how different religions coexist side by side at various levels that we truly come to learn about religion in multicultural education.

This dissertation analyzed the legal and policy issues involved with teaching about religion in U.S. public schools as part of a multicultural curriculum. U.S. public schools are government entities, and thus, the people who work within the public education system are bound by U.S. laws, policies, regulations and court rulings relating to schools. This dissertation used federal and lower court rulings dealing with Constitutional demands for the separation of church and state and the resulting public school policies and practices to highlight the difficulties many school teachers and administrators have attempting to sift through dense and often vague or contradictory legal dicta contained therein. Additionally, this dissertation combined legal, religious and socio-political theories to create a new theoretical framework, Critical Religious Legal Theory, which was then used to analyze the structures that shape educational law and policy in the realm of teaching about religion in public schools. The analysis focused on critically analyzing the laws and policies dealing with religion and public schools as social phenomena and as tools of control, and the education law and policy makers in the context of the social and political atmosphere at the time that the laws/policies were created. This dissertation also critically analyzed the generally accepted Christian norms in public education and America's reliance upon ceremonial deism, as it relates to public schools. And this research explained how religion has been used as a tool of control and how and why religion can and should be demystified through the use of multicultural curricula that are inclusive of religion to (amongst other things) promote secular "moral truths" in character education like goodness, justice, love, truth while dispelling the religious stereotypes and prejudices that have been promulgated. The research generated by this dissertation, along with the pre-existing body of research on the intersection of religion and public schools, can be used by researchers, administrators and educators to expand the curricula in public schools to include courses where religion is discussed, in a constitutionally permissible manner, to inoculate against the ignorance behind many religiously motivated hate crimes.

This book explores the advantages of and challenges concerning Special Religious Education (SRE) in multicultural Australia and argues for the need for General Religious Education (GRE) as well. Through the lens of the most recent scholarship, and drawing on an in-depth qualitative study and specific case studies, the book examines the current debate on the role of religious education within government schools. It addresses key concepts of values education, spirituality, health and wellbeing, and cultural and religious identity. It analyses why it is important to retain SRE, together with GRE, as government policy. It explores highly relevant, controversial and contested issues regarding SRE, including the 30% of Australia’s population who declare themselves as having “no religion”, and brings fresh insights to the table. While secularization has increased in both the national and international spheres, there has also been an increase in fundamentalism within religious beliefs.
