Launched in an era when speed and grandeur went hand in hand, the RMS Queen Mary is the last survivor of the golden age of ocean liners. From the time of her maiden voyage in 1936, passengers crossed the North Atlantic cocooned in luxury. Movie stars, tycoons, politicians, and royalty shared a ship with everyday people, for whom this was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. During World War II, the Queen Mary ferried countless soldiers safely across the sea and, at war's end, carried their brides and babies home to America. Refurbished and polished to her previous glory, the Queen Mary continued to carry passengers until her final voyage to Long Beach in 1967. The RMS Queen Mary now serves as a floating hotel and tourist attraction, a living testament to her glamorous history, a generous showcase of art, and a magnificent example of a time when oceans could be crossed in both comfort and beauty.

This colourful history tells the story of Cunard’s RMS Queen Mary, who along with her running mate Queen Elizabeth covered the transatlantic route from Southampton to New York via Cherbourg, the British answer to the German and French superliners. She was launched in May 1936 and immediately won the coveted Blue Riband, winning it again in 1938, before she served as a troopship in the war. She then carried on plying the Atlantic route with Queen Elizabeth until the jet age changed the world again and she was retired, now preserved as a floating museum and restaurant in Long Beach, California. Andrew Britton presents a wealth of unpublished photographic material and ephemera from his unparalleled collection to tell the story of this historic liner, including rare wartime views, shots of her ‘grey ghost’ paintwork, unique behind the scenes photographs, from the air shots, interior views and a wide selection of menus, log books, timetables, tickets and much more besides. Even including captain’s invitations, this superlative book offers a captivating trip through the history of this great liner.

Even before her launch RMS Queen Mary earned a special place in history. Job number 534, as the new Cunard liner was known, was Britain's largest passenger ship by far. In 1930 construction was begun, but as the stranglehold of The Depression tightened, Cunard announced that work was to cease. The half-finished hull sat on Clydebank for over two years, but was far from forgotten. For the people of Britain, 534 became a beacon of hope; a barometer of the nation's economy. And so it was no coincidence that on the day work at John Brown's shipyard resumed, prices on the London Stock Exchange shot up. A new age had dawned. A few months later the first of a long line of 'firsts' began for the new liner. Britain's first ship over 1000 feet in length was ready to be launched and for the first time the consort of a reigning British monarch would do the honours. The liner's 31-year ocean-going career would break countless records and re-write history. And her popularity soon spread across the Atlantic as she won the affection of America. Today she is enjoying retirement in the sun in Pier J, Long Beach, California as a floating hotel and events centre. Author David Ellery poses the 101 most crucial questions about her, from design, construction and machinery to stories concerning her name, interior design, and retirement, and provides detailed but concise answers to each one. How fast was Queen Mary? Is it true the Queen Mary is haunted? Is the new Queen Mary 2 anything like the original Queen Mary?

You've never heard of the Queen Mary?' They looked shocked. 'Oh yeah! The Queen Mary! Where's it headed?' 'The United States, ' one girl answered. 'What are the chances of stowing away?' I asked. All I had to my name were the clothes on my back, a toothbrush, a razor, my passport, and about $3.50, coupled with a prayer in my heart. 'I'll tell you what, mate. If you got guts enough to stowaway, we'll get ye aboard, and we'll take care of ye.' Without knowing it, I was stepping into a small part of history. In his true-life adventure story, Stacy Miller tells the tale of how he wandered across Europe, only to find himself a stowaway trying to get home on the illustrious RMS Queen Mary's final voyage. During the RMS Queen Mary's 'Last Great Cruise, ' a thirty-nine-day historical voyage from Southampton, England, to Long Beach, California, via Cape Horn, Stacy boarded in Lisbon, Portugal, three days out of Southampton with thirty-six days left to her journey. Though intending to stay undercover, he is discovered and made a crewmember in the middle of this international affair. However, Stacy's story isn't just about being a stowaway on a ship. It's about how a twenty-one-year-old American boy grew up, became stranded in Europe, and took a leap of faith to become a part of an historical event. Find out how his story ends in Stacy Miller's action-packed memoir, The Last Stowaway: RMS Queen Mary.

Excerpt from R. M.S. "Queen Mary" "A Noble Tribute to the Imagination of Man;" Launched September 26th, 1934, by Her Majesty Queen Mary, Who Was Accompanied by His Late Majesty King George V and His Majesty King Edward VIII, Then Prince of Wales She was, indeed, a possibility only in recent years. Insufficient knowledge and skill were available for such a ship, not so very long ago. There are, for instance, in her engine compartments, four geared wheels for reducing the revolutions of the turbines to slower motion for the propeller shafts. Each wheel is fourteen feet in diameter, and that means hundreds of tons of steel. The mesh of the gearing on those monsters, nevertheless, is fined down to about a thousandth of an inch; and we are told that precision so infinitesimal for metal so weighty, to receive the impact of such enormous power, is but a late acquisition to the skill in workshops where engines are made. I must say that I didn't know what the elderly man in spectacles, bowed intently over the circumference of a vast disc in a shop at Brown's, was doing, till the mystery was whispered to me, and then I looked at him again with awakened respect. There are, too, more than a quarter of a million blades in the turbines, and each has been fitted by hand. Ultimately, her terrific power is guided by the skilled fingers of craftsmen to whom engines have the sensitiveness of delicate living things. All the money spent on her bulk would be wasted, but for that touch. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This history book tells the story of RMS Queen Elizabeth, the ship which, along with her running mate Queen Mary, successfully worked Cunard's transatlantic service for much of the twentieth century. She was launched in September 1938, the largest passenger liner built at the time and for many years after. Entering service as a troopship in the Second World War, she had a successful career before retiring in 1968, after which she was sold to a Hong Kong businessman with plans to convert her into a floating university. But it was not to be and she was capsized in a mysterious fire in the harbour in 1972, a bizarre and unbecoming end for one of Cunard's most faithful servants. Andrew Britton delves into his comprehensive maritime collection to present a wealth of unpublished photography and ephemera, aerial photography and even Queen Elizabeth's original purchase receipt, to cover every detail of this historic liner.
