Influence may be a synonym for leadership, but it is not merely confined to formal leadership roles in the workplace. As this book will articulate, influence occurs in families, with customers, with neighbours, on the sports field with fellow players and the opposition and even the referee or umpire. In fact, influence is seen at its clearest when it occurs for the benefit of both parties without any positional authority in the relationship. This book outlines the why, what and how, of influencing others in an easy to read format with numerous real life stories to illustrate. If you lead others in any capacity then you are going to greatly benefit from reading this book. "In "The Art of Persuasive Influence" Glen Sharkey will take you on a fascinating journey into human relationships where kindness, care, respect, and empathy triumph over negativity." Nabil Doss, Expert in Influential Communication, 2016-2017 President of the Global Speakers Federation "Glen is perfectly placed to write this important book on influence largely because he is someone that has lived it out. He is a leader whose care for those he is leads is genuine, empowering and persuasive." Michael McQueen, Five-time bestselling author, Nevin Award Winner "Glen walks his talk and this book is a great example of his practical, no nonsense and fun approach to coaching, training and life. This is an essential read if you are in any position to work with or indeed live with other people to whom you influence." Karen Tui Boyes, NZ Business Woman of the Year, CEO Spectrum Education "From assessing 'pain points' through to his innovative 'care model', Glen's exciting book helps you to put in place authentic strategies to develop levels of influence that can positively shape lives. Filled with amusing anecdotes and real life stories that add real value to the reader, this book, I am sure, will become an instant classic." Tom O'Neil, New Zealand Herald Columnist, Best-selling international author and multi-award-winning speaker "I love this book. Glen Sharkey has captured in a short easy read what some authors take books and more books to cover. The Art of Persuasive Influence is leadership distilled down to easy to grasp key principles that will serve you whether you're an emerging or experienced leader in any field - a salient reminder of what really matters for us all" Simon Wickham, Ex CEO of Yachting NZ, CEO of The Trusts "Glen Sharkey's latest book offers invaluable advice to deal with all types of leadership challenges. The book is written to be accessible to everyone, whatever their leader role may be - in the workplace, the sportsground, at home - and contains a huge number of ideas and suggestions to allow the reader to become a positive influence on those around them. I would strongly urge anyone who is a leader to read, learn and grow in their role. A great read." John Shackleton, Masters Swimming Champion and Award Winning Speaker "Glen Sharkey is an expert when it comes to leadership and using 30 years of experience in developing people he has created a book full of real life examples that will help you develop meaningful relationships through care and courage, gaining you long term respect, trust and influence amongst your peers and community. 'The Art of Persuasive Influence' is a must read for individuals, partners, parents, leaders and employers alike." Andrew Chambers, Director of Eightfold Financial Services "As a relationship management specialist I love this book. Glen Sharkey has captured the essence of influence. As he says; "The giving and taking of influence is the basis of relationships." I could not agree more! Not only that - he goes on to detail how to use influence, when to use it and how to do it ethically. It's an easy read, yet packed with useful, practical and ready to implement models, strategies and ideas." Lindsay Adams, CEO Teamocracy, Global Speakers Federation Life Member, Nevin Award Winner

During America's Gilded Age (dates), the country was swept by a mania for all things Japanese. It spread from coast to coast, enticed everyone from robber barons to street vendors with its allure, and touched every aspect of life from patent medicines to wallpaper. Americans of the time found in Japanese art every design language: modernism or tradition, abstraction or realism, technical virtuosity or unfettered naturalism, craft or art, romance or functionalism. The art of Japan had a huge influence on American art and design. Title compares juxtapositions of American glass, silver and metal arts, ceramics, textiles, furniture, jewelry, advertising, and packaging with a spectrum of Japanese material ranging from expensive one-of-a-kind art crafts to mass-produced ephemera. Beginning in the Aesthetic movement, this book continues through the Arts & Crafts era and ends in Frank Lloyd Wright's vision, showing the reader how that model became transformed from Japanese to American in design and concept. Hannah Sigur is an art historian, writer, and editor with eight years' residence and study in East and Southeast Asia. She has a master's degree from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, and is completing a PhD in the arts of Japan. Her writings include co-authoring A Master Guide to the Art of Floral Design (Timber Press, 2002), which is listed in "The Best Books of 2002" by The Christian Science Monitor and is now in its second edition; and "The Golden Ideal: Chinese Landscape Themes in Japanese Art," in Lotus Leaves, A Master Guide to the Art of Floral Design (2001). She lives in Berkeley.

Joanna Baillie and the Art of Moral Influence explores the project of moral reform that Baillie sets out for herself in the Introductory Discourse to her first volume of Plays on the Passions (1798). It begins by revealing the foundation that Baillie creates for her project as she combines her own unique theology with eighteenth-century moral philosophy and seventeenth- and eighteenth-century discourses on the theatre's potential to reform audiences. This book argues that Baillie uses this eclectic mix to craft a potentially radical social critique in the midst of a seemingly conservative moral project. Using examples from fifteen of her plays as well as from her prefaces and her religious tract, the book traces Baillie's moral project from its direct representations in De Monfort and Henriquez through its dangerous complexities in plays such as Orra and The Trial to its conflict with domestic ideology as an alternative means of reform in plays such as The Dream, Ethwald, The Phantom, and Witchcraft. This analysis of Baillie's project reveals how she ultimately overcomes the difficulties inherent in her project by asking her audiences to take responsibility for their moral reform rather than relying upon the domestic woman to change society and by asking her audiences to ground their interpretations in the basic truths of Christianity. Understanding Baillie's moral project and the discourses that influenced it and then seeing how it is enacted throughout her plays will allow teachers and scholars to appreciate even more fully the complexities of this British Romantic playwright.

Now, with Henrik Fexeus's expertise, you can. Excerpt from Sir John Everett Millais: His Art and Influence There is no intention to give in these pages anything approaching a detailed personal history of Sir John Millais, or to treat at any length the facts of his private life. Such matters are better left to the biographers who deal with the man and desire to draw a portrait of him as he lived. What is offered here is an appreciation of his influence upon the art of his time, an estimate of the value of his intervention, as an artist, in the aesthetic movements that marked the years over which his career extended. Therefore only those personal details have been included which are important because they have some bearing upon his professional progress, or have helped to confirm him in a preference for a particular line of action.
