'Without football, we were strangers under a shared roof. With it, we were father and son.’ Inspired by his father’s devotion to Newcastle United and the heroes of yesteryear, Duncan Hamilton brings to life a bygone age telling the story of British football from the hardscrabble 1940s and the ‘never-had-it-so-good’ ’50s right through to the dowdy First Division of the ’70s and ’80s, and today’s slick Premiership. Hamilton recalls some of football’s most sublime players, managers and characters, from Bill Shankly and Jackie Milburn to George Best and Lionel Messi. But at the heart of The Footballer Who could Fly is Hamilton’s relationship with his own father. Here he tells how football became the only real connection between two people who, apart from their love of the beautiful game, were wholly different from one another.

Duncan Hamilton won the classic Le Mans 24-Hours race in 1953, co-driving his workcentered C-Type Jaguar with Tony Rolt. In 1954 the same pair finished second, losing to a much larger-engined V12 Ferrari and by the narrowest margin in years. In all, Duncan Hamilton competed in nine of those great Le Mans endurance classics. Having cut his racing teeth in such pre-war cars as the R-Type M.G and the Bugatti Type 35B, Duncan graduated to one of the immortal Lago- Talbot Grand Prix cars—which he subsequently mislaid in a French coal-hole. After a hugely eventful racing career—only Duncan could get himself fired by Jaguar for winning the Rheims 12-Hours race in 1956—he eventually hung up his racing helmet in 1958. As Earl Howe wrote in the original 1960 foreword to this book, though the drivers of this age were fiercely competitive, there were also "friends to meet, stories to tell and almost certainly a party to be enjoyed…" Duncan Hamilton was certainly a little larger than life, and this book tells the story of a man who wasn’t just one of the most successful drivers of the 1950s, but also the man who trespassed at Brooklands, who spent the war in the Fleet Air Arm accidentally trying to drown American Admirals, and who was once stopped for speeding on the Cromwell Road, rushing to take part in a TV program on road safety. It is a must for any classic car enthusiast’s bookshelf.

He features in the International Rugby Board Hall of Fame, the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame, and the New Zealand Business Hall of Fame. He is Sir Wilson Whineray, one of New Zealand's favourite sons, a legendary achiever in both rugby and business. this is the man who had all of Cardiff Arms Park standing, singing 'For He's a Jolly Good Fellow' at the conclusion of the epic All Black tour of 1963-1964. He was a gifted, natural leader who, following his celebrated rugby career, became an iconic business leader, chairing the board of Carter Holt Harvey for 10 years. His amazing story has never before been told. Reluctant to be seen to be blowing his own trumpet, over the years Sir Wilson has turned down countless offers to have his life story published, but was finally coaxed out of his reticence by Bob Howitt, one of the country's most highly respected rugby writers and biographers. Bob has extracted myriad enthralling stories from Sir Wilson's rugby and business colleagues and the people closest to him, to produce a work of magical quality without which no rugby library will be complete.

Fiction. "[Ron Tanner] is fabulously imaginative, experimental, witty, often breathtaking...both male and female voices are handled beautifully, although the prose is what we've come to call 'muscular.' At first I felt that this was actually two collections, one concerned with life as we know it and one as we fear it will be--but came to believe that the worlds are perfectly married through their askew inventiveness and their witty contemporary language. It's very assured and audacious work" --Janet Burroway, 2002 Judge, Chandra Prize.

100 goals in a season is the Australian Rules equivalent of a triple century in Test cricket, and there has always been a fascination with goals and the sharp shooters who have kicked them. In 100 GOALS, Jon Anderson speaks to the 21 living players to have joined the magical 100-goal club, dating back to the freakish Peter Hudson in 1968 through to Lance ‘Buddy’ Franklin 40 years on.

The members of this elite club speak of their inspirational childhood heroes, the full backs who made their job that much more difficult and ultimately the player they regard as the best full forward they have seen. This is the first time these players’ stories have been put together, making for a fascinating journey through the mindset of the men to have kicked the ton.

About the author: Jon Anderson has been a sports journalist, commentator and writer for many years, contributing to Melbourne’s Herald Sun, Fox sports and 3aW. He has written many sports books including with Paul Chapman (Chappy), Mark ‘Jacko’ Jackson, Gary Ablett sr, Rodney Hogg and Brian Taylor.
