Arguing that the way Jesus leads and the way we follow are symbiotic, Peterson begins with a study of how the ways of those who came before Christ revealed and prepared the way of the Lord that became complete in Jesus. He then challenges the ways of the contemporary American church, showing in stark relief how what we have chosen to focus on--consumerism, celebrity, charisma, and so forth--obliterates what is unique in the Jesus way.

Peter uses two chapters, Luke 24 and Acts 2, to spell out the priorities of the Risen Jesus and how the apostles responded. From Luke he draws the following themes: Enjoy Jesus' Resurrection; Receive His Forgiveness; Welcome His Spirit; Feed on his Scriptures; Receive his Sacrament; Tell others his Good News. The parallel themes from Acts: Share with Jesus' People; Worship him always; Follow his teaching; Live his life; Resist his enemies; Trust Jesus for the future. The originality of this idea lies partly in its neat focus on two representative chapters, and partly in the intended presentation which will follow the same successful pattern of The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Bible, with wide margins, pull out boxes etc.

This groundbreaking book successfully fuses the two overlapping traditions of Zen Buddhism and Christianity. Very few Christians who are interested in Zen Buddhism understand the fundamentals of the religion itself. Most of the books which are available on Zen are superficial and fraught with caricatures and erroneous generalizations - concentrating more on meditation than on the real essence of Zen. Now the Christian who has been waiting for a clear and thorough explanation of Zen in terms he can understand has been provided with Zen Way—Jesus Way—a unique inside look at Christianity and Zen Buddhism by Dr. Tucker N. Callaway, a committed Christian missionary who for twenty years has practiced zazen in Japanese temples in an effort to reach the heart of the faith. Calloway has a knack for making philosophical concepts clear to the general reader and begins Zen Way—Jesus Way by presenting the fundamental presuppositions of Zen and several of the concepts which are logically deduced from them. Next he relates some of his experiences in Buddhist temples, while explaining the practical applications of Zen philosophy. Finally he interprets the Jesus Way in a manner that makes possible a genuine comparison with the Zen way.

When we carry deep hurts by others, when we harbor resentment, revenge, jealousy, anger, and hateful attitudes, when we are unwilling to give or to receive forgiveness, we are positioning ourselves for agonizing problems and a host of potential personal illnesses. Whereas forgiveness is a key that opens the door to avenues of good health and a more satisfying life, unforgiveness keeps the door locked on a self-imposed, critical, unbending, legalistic, I-know-I'm-right outlook on life. The truth is that forgiveness blesses the giver more than it benefits the receiver. (from the Introduction) James Wagner maintains that the most crippling illness we face today is a resentful, unforgiving heart and the intentional withholding of forgiveness. In fact, he notes that in his experience people request healing prayer to relieve their spiritual, emotional, and mental anguish over damaged and fractured relationships as often as they do to seek comfort for their physical pains and limitations. Though forgiveness it is at the very heart of the gospel, it can be difficult to forgive and forget -- so how can Christians become more merciful in their daily lives? Wagner suggests that the answer to that question can be found by examining the paradigm of forgiveness modeled by Jesus -- and Forgiveness: The Jesus Way provides readers with a unique understanding of forgiveness as taught and lived by Jesus. More than just an academic study, this book offers practical guidelines for developing healthier relationships and improving personal wellness by learning to give and receive true forgiveness. Structured in twelve sessions, Forgiveness: The Jesus Way is an excellent personal and group study resource. Each biblically rooted session explores several facets of forgiveness, and includes questions for stimulating discussion and reinforcing key concepts. Recommended resources and notes for the reader to ponder are also provided. James K. Wagner is a retired United Methodist pastor now residing in Galloway, Ohio. In addition to serving several Ohio congregations during four decades of active ministry, Wagner spent nine years as the director of The Upper Room Prayer and Healing Ministries and the executive director of the Disciplined Order of Christ. He is the author of numerous articles and books on healing ministry, including The Spiritual Heart of Your Health (Upper Room Books).

What does God's mission look like? Who is supposed to carry it out--and how? Juan F. Martínez leads us on an inquiry into God's mission in the world: what it is, what it is not, and who is invited to be part of it. If Jesus is truly God's mission incarnate, we need to look at what Jesus did and how he did it. Martínez helps readers understand what mission means, why Christians in the past have made missteps, and how we can learn from Christian communities that are spreading the good news of Jesus today. Doing mission in the way of Jesus may look different from what many assume, but it is a call that the church cannot afford to miss. Choosing the Jesus Way uncovers the history and religious experiences of the first American Indian converts to Pentecostalism. Focusing on the Assemblies of God denomination, the story begins in 1918, when white missionaries fanned out from the South and Midwest to convert Native Americans in the West and other parts of the country. Drawing on new approaches to the global history of Pentecostalism, Angela Tarango shows how converted indigenous leaders eventually transformed a standard Pentecostal theology of missions in ways that reflected their own religious struggles and advanced their sovereignty within the denomination. Key to the story is the Pentecostal "indigenous principle," which encourages missionaries to train local leadership in hopes of creating an indigenous church rooted in the culture of the missionized. In Tarango's analysis, the indigenous principle itself was appropriated by the first generation of Native American Pentecostals, who transformed it to critique aspects of the missionary project and to argue for greater religious autonomy. More broadly, Tarango scrutinizes simplistic views of religious imperialism and demonstrates how religious forms and practices are often mutually influenced in the American experience.

Jesus' life should turn our world upside-down. His first observers, according to Luke, were routinely seized with amazement, both at the bending of physics--making the blind see and lame walk--and at the ridiculous things he did and taught. A careful look at the Jesus of the Gospels sketches a man completely out of touch with conventional thinking; a man radically devoted to living a shocking life for the sake of the broken and forgotten. In popular depictions of Jesus today he seems to be more concerned with upholding a conventional way of life than with overturning our understanding of ourselves. Jesus' life story should lead more to humble servanthood than to syncopated light shows in church or the triumph of a political candidate or a well-ordered and respectable lifestyle. The Upside Down Way is a series of devotionals drawn from the text of Luke. Each devotional is an invitation to a fresh look at the outrageous words and actions of Jesus. Author and pastor Matthew Ingalls combines rigorous historical study with a voice that is unflinchingly bold, reflective, honest, and challenging, in order to elevate Luke's ridiculous Jesus to his rightful position as the fountain of Christian faith.

Christians today are facing a crisis of influence. In our rush to speak truth to today's tensions, cultural issues, and trending controversies, it becomes all too easy for us to focus on proving our points rather than extending God's grace. Conversely, when we seek only to love but never proclaim a better way, we short-circuit God's plan. As believers in Christ, we need to be known for both truth and love. In this six-session video Bible study (DVD/digital video downloads sold separately), evangelist Matt Brown draws on the example of the apostle Paul to show how believers can influence their world with the truth while living in a way that reveals their love. In the first half of Paul's letter to the Ephesians, he issued no imperative commands except to "remember." Paul did not instruct the believers to do anything new but only to remember the gospel they had received. But in the second half of his letter, he issued forty imperative commands, instructing them to "[speak] the truth in love [and] grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ" (Ephesians 4:15 esv). Truth Plus Love is the formula for transforming our lives and influencing the world for Christ. It begins as we seek to develop the fruit of the Spirit in our lives: "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control" (Galatians 5:22–23 esv). As the Holy Spirit develops these traits within us, it transforms our character and makes us appealing ambassadors for Christ. We naturally begin to draw others to love of Christ within us . . . and to the truth found in God's Word. Designed for use with the Truth Plus Love Video Study (sold separately).

Imagine what our world might look like if Christians became known for remarkable love, as well as life-giving truth. The stakes are high and the need is great for Christians to represent Jesus to a watching world. And today, we have more influence than ever before--for better and for worse. We are among the first generations to have access to a global megaphone through social media. But it's not enough to speak truth louder to a noisy culture. To counter the reputation Christians have earned, our love must be just as loud. Ask evangelist Matt Brown, and he will tell you Christians today are facing a crisis of influence. In our rush to speak truth to today's tensions, cultural issues, and trending controversies, it becomes all too easy to focus on proving our points rather than extending God's grace. Conversely, when we seek only to love yet never proclaim a better way, we short-circuit God's plan. Truth Plus Love invites you to rediscover the biblical framework for engaging culture as ambassadors of Christ. It's hard, it's messy, and it's the unfinished project of a lifetime, yet here we find our great adventure: representing God to a watching world.
