The original Smart Aleck Chronicles was published to little, if any notice in 2007. This was followed five years later with the release of a second volume. As noted in the prefaces to both these collections, their intended purpose was to present to readers a series of literary entertainments on a range of issues, activities, personalities and phenomena. In this, the third volume, these observations and commentaries continue, combined once again with short works of fiction. The author hopes, as he did with respect to the two previous volumes, that this edition is faithful to the lofty standards and possible amusements of those books.

The original Smart Aleck Chronicles was published to little, if any notice in 2007. As noted in the preface to that volume, it had neither plot or identifiable structure, its intended purpose being to present a series of entertainments on a wide range of ridiculous activities that constitute everyday life. Whether it was faithful to that lofty purpose remains a mystery, even to the author that made that bold declaration. Four years later, a second volume of the Smart Aleck Chronicles appears, its intent no less high minded than the standards of lunacy reached by its predecessor, its implementation no less laughable. This time, as in the previous volume, there are pithy and pointless observations that may have appeared in previous publications for which the author may have had responsibility, fictitious biographies of friends and colleagues, several short works of fiction and top ten lists of observations that may be symptomatic of clinical insanity. Further, just to ensure that the reader is not entirely dismayed, there are also several courageous attempts at poetry.

A work of uncanny originality, David Huddle's nineteenth book is the account of an extraordinary death trip taken by a charismatic and beloved woman, her husband, and an astonishing number of offspring, from infants to young adults. The Faulkes Chronicle explores how children grieve, and shows how the wit and courage of even the littlest brothers and sisters can be a source of resilience. Familial conversation composes an intimate requiem, transforming loss into comprehension. Only one of our finest writers could manage this delicate material. The Faulkes Chronicle is a brief, autumnal novel— made of momentary details yet with an encompassing grandeur.

The Dung Ball Chronicle

“A smart aleck with an unpleasant tinge of arrogance,” I saw with a glance at an email that made Doreen guffaw. Much as this irritated me, I couldn't contest it. Even you seemed to have had enough of me. I don't know if it was because ...

The uncertainty of what we don’t know about our universe, once accepted, can lead us arbitrarily far. What we know about this chronicle: The narrator is John Densch, a frustrated husband, father and low-level technocrat who starts the whole ball rolling with a joke about a “bog monster.” We meet his wife, Doreen, who wants so badly for John to move beyond the imaginary ensnaring him, but finds that everything comes with a price; Bollum, a voice in young John’s head that told him tales of alien abduction and of a technological utopia for humanity, albeit one with an expiration date; and Derek, an abductee trapped on Bug World, at first a character in Bollum’s tales, but in time an alternate existence for John. As John is jolted from one conflict to another, on earth and in his head, he encounters questions big and small about faith and self-reliance, meaning and trust. Like Derek, he must decide to return to his normal life, or not; both know what they must swallow to get there.

The Keeper Chronicle Tales 1

“But I didn't.” “Why not?” He took a swig of the whiskey. “Because it felt like a violation of trust.” “I wasn't aware you worried about keeping my trust.” It was a smart-aleck comment, but it was after two am, and I was past caring.
