The Straight Path: A Religious Guide to Finding and Fulfilling One’s Purpose describes the straight path, and how to walk it, so as to discover one’s purpose and fulfill that purpose. It examines the relationship between the soul, the mind and the body, and explains how to strengthen their connection by acting virtuously and avoiding vice. It describes how to establish a closer connection to God. The Bible, the Quran and other sacred texts have explored the nature of the straight path. The Buddha, Mencius, Mahatma Gandhi and other prophets and philosophers have devoted their lives to walking it. The Straight Path draws upon what they have learned, and adds to their knowledge, by merging their wisdom with modern scientific insights into humanity’s evolution. The Straight Path examines how thought and action shape evolution, and how evolution is a physical, mental and spiritual process of development. It describes how to strengthen one’s mind and body, and by doing so, strengthen humanity. It gives direction to those who have lost their way and answers to those who seek greater meaning to their lives. The Straight Path shall guide you along your path and help you to fulfill your purpose. It shall help you to draw closer to God.

The world's largest religion, Islam is also one of the fastest growing and most politically potent, yet its nature remains obscure to many westerners despite its common theological and historical roots with Judaism and Christianity. Combining the finest Western scholarship with an insider's understanding of the Muslim world, this book provides a brief, yet comprehensive introduction to the faith, belief, and practice of Islam from the seventh century to the contemporary resurgence. Drawing on his extensive experience traveling, researching, and teaching in the Muslim world, John L. Esposito records the struggle of Muslims to define and follow their way of life through the development of Islamic law, theology, mysticism, and philosophy, bringing his discussion to life with excerpts from a wide range of original sources. Written for a broad audience, Islam: The Straight Path addresses the powerful and pervasive role of Islam in modern Muslim life and the issues that Islam faces, avoiding simplified political generalizations about the contemporary scene. Completely up-to-date, this book is indispensable to understanding the Islamic world during this turbulent and important period in its history.

The legal treatment of sexual behavior is a subject that receives little scholarly attention in the field of Middle East women’s studies. Important questions about the relationship between sexuality and the law and about the societies enforcing that relationship are rarely addressed in the current literature. Elyse Semerdjian’s “Off the Straight Path” takes a bold step toward filling that gap by offering a fascinating look at the historical progression of the treatment of illicit sex under Islamic law. Semerdjian provides a comprehensive review of the concept of zina, i.e., sexual indiscretion, by exploring the diverse interpretation of zina crime as presented in a variety of sources from the Qur’an and hadith to legal literature. She then delves into the history of legal responses to zina within the specific community of Aleppo, Syria. Drawing on a wealth of shari‘a court records, Semerdjian provides a realistic view of Syrian society during the Ottoman period. With vivid detail, she describes specific women’s lives and experiences as their cases are presented before the court. Semerdjian argues that the actual treatment of zina crimes in the courts differs substantially from sentences prescribed by codified Islamic jurisprudence. In contrast to the violent corporal punishments dictated in the Islamic legal code, the courts often punished crimes of sexual indiscretion with nonviolent sentences, such as removal from the community. Employing exceptional insight, “Off the Straight Path” presents a powerful challenge to the traditional view of Islamic law, enabling a richer understanding of Islamic society.

The Straight Path

It springs from this Tradition that Quran showed a straight path to reach the goal
and the Holy Prophet reached the goal by treading over it faithfully . He afforded
a guidance to people who were going astray from the path of righteousness .
